Fire resistance protects against most fire damage and the majority of hot objects, but it will not prevent potions from boiling or scrolls and spellbooks from burning, nor will it prevent non-fireproof armor from becoming burnt. It is a must-have before hitting Gehennom, as fire traps are prevalent there and capable of reducing your maximum hit points. Monks get Fire Resistance at XL 11, and priests at XL 20.
Fire resistance can be obtained from eating the following corpses (along with the odds of getting the resistance), listed in order of their chance of granting resistance:
- Red mold: 3% (vegan)
- Gray ooze: 7% (vegetarian)
- Gelatinous cube: 10% (vegan)
- Red naga hatchling: 10%
- Flesh golem: 12%
- Chromatic Dragon: 17% (Caveman quest only)
- Fire ant: 20%
- Pyrolisk: 20%
- Red naga: 20%
- Wizard of Yendor: 25%
- Hell hound pup: 47%
- Salamander: 53%
- Fire giant: 60%
- Hell hound: 80%
- Ixoth: 100% (Knight quest only)
- Lord Surtur: 100% (Valkyrie quest only)
- Red dragon: 100%
Upon receiving Fire Resistance from consuming a monster, you receive the message "You feel a momentary chill", or, if hallucinating, "You be chillin'."
