The spellbook of identify takes longer to read than other level 3 spells, but is no more difficult[1]. Some characters with good intelligence and wisdom and a high level will be able to read a spellbook of identify, thus allowing them to use the spell of identify and remove the need for collecting scrolls of identify.
Casting this spell at Unskilled or Basic levels has the same effect as reading an uncursed scroll of identify, and at Skilled or Expert levels has the effect of a blessed scroll of identify.
